The KAPISANAN Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture and San Miguel Beer Present: The 8th annual KULTURA Filipino Arts Festival

Monday, August 5, 2013

The KAPISANAN Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture, Canada’s premiere Filipino- Canadian cultural hub, has set the stage for the Filipino-Canadian renaissance in Toronto. From Top Chef competitions, to musicians on world stages; from the fashion runways to international galleries; from the New York theatre to Youtube sensations; Filipino talent is finally getting the recognition it deserves. KAPISANAN once again will showcase world class Filipino talent with the 8th annual KULTURA Filipino Arts Festival from August 7 to August 11, 2013.
Take a look at the schedule below to find the awesome events taking place this week!

Day 1: Bayanihan: An Interactive Art Installation at Daniels Spectrum
Location and Time: @Daniel Spectrum 585 Dundas St. East 11 am - 7 pm
As part of Toronto Artscape Inc.’s Outdoor Arts Program, Toronto-based Filipino artists, Julius Poncelet Manupul, Kristina Guison, and Tim Manalo will collaborate with Regent Park, Cabbagetown and the surrounding neighbourhoods to lead in Bayanihan: An Interactive Art Installation at Daniels Spectrum.

The participatory art project will bring these established Filipino-Canadian artists together with the local community, to create a life-sized woven bahay kubo—a Filipino hut.

This project hopes to embody the spirit of bayanihan, not only in its literal act of a community creating a collective piece, but also in highlighting the universality of the theme of home in different cultural backgrounds. During this event, participants will unearth their personal stories of home through paint and merge with others to discover the power of the community’s greater narrative.

Day 2: KAPISANAN Legacy Campaign Fundraising Gala Dinner in community partnership with Lamesa Filipino Kitchen
Location and Time: @Lamesa 669 Queen St. West 6pm - onward
The Ilustrados Dinner is a special event hosted by Lamesa Filipino Kitchen (#1 Prix Fixe Menu in Toronto - BlogTO 2013) that shines a light on Filipino culture, history and cuisine.

In this second installment of Ilustrados for the 2013 KULTURA Festival, Lamesa is spotlighting the next generation of Filipino chefs, all under the age of 25.  The featured young chefs for this special night will be collaborating on an epic 12-course dinner!
Day 3: (KONTRA)BIDA: A CLUTCH Vol. 5 Exhibit Opening Night
Location and Time: @KAPISANAN 167 Augusta Ave. 7pm
Culminating a five-month arts-based, Filipino cultural immersion program for young women (aged 17-24), and the first time coinciding with KULTURA, CLUTCH participants mount a final exhibition. CLUTCH Volume 5 participants Patricia Abuel, Shaina Agbayani, Joanna Delos Reyes, Marie Sotto and Loisel Wilson will collectively show stories of identity, family, and home with the theme of (KONTRA)BIDA.
Artist Statement: This exhibit explores the duality of the heroine, the BIDA, and the antagonist, the KONTRABIDA, as they battle in our own stories of identity, family, and home. The art in this show serves as special weapons wielded to challenge and question the obstacles that Filipinas, removed and dislocated from their homeland, face.

Day 4: PLAY READINGS: A retrospective of Carlos Bulosan’s 30 years of Filipino-Canadian Theatre
Location and Time: @KAPISANAN 167 Augusta Ave. 8:30pm
This inaugural Tambay Nights, in community partnership with Event Innovations, is a series of live virtual concerts that will introduce popular Philippine-based artists to the Filipino and broader communities in Toronto. Tambay (that’s Tagalog for “hang-out”) is an intimate live concert stream of popular Philippine-based bands, who will be playing their sets exclusively for audiences at KAPISANAN.

Day 5: KULTURA Philippine Culinary Competition: Kain Kalye - Filipino Street EatsLocation and Time: @Artscape Wychwood Barns 601 Christie St. 12pm - 7pm
With food trucks and street food festivals popping up in the last few years, street food culture is really catching on in Toronto. The 2nd year of KULTURA’s Philippine Culinary Competition is a valuable cultural addition to this growing trend. Lamesa Filipino Kitchen (last year’s champion), a groundbreaking Toronto Filipino restaurant will co-present this year’s KULTURA Philippine Culinary Competition. The theme for this year is Kain Kalye: Filipino Street Eats.

While enjoying a wide selection of Filipino Street Eats, festival goers can also get their summer shopping done at the curated Marketplace with products from Filipino artists and entrepreneurs.
And finally, this KULTURA finale event isn’t complete without a live music stage! The KULTURA LIVE! Stage will feature up- and-coming Filipino-Canadian DJs, dance crews, singer- songwriters, Filipino heritage musicians, dancers, and more!

Ipanema Making a splash: Official Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim

Friday, August 2, 2013

Official Footwear Sponsor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in Miami Beach, FL through 2015, Ipanema made a splash in its successful first year of the sponsorship trilogy.  From July 18th-July 22nd, the Brazilian sandal brand infiltrated The Raleigh, home of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, with an impressive poolside cabana, presence at notable runway shows, such as L*SPACE by Monica Wise, and a cocktail event for an exclusive group of VIP guests.
The brand’s poolside cabana, designed to be a chic beachside living room, functioned as an oasis enjoyed by the event’s guests. Steady foot traffic kept Ipanema’s cabana bustling as guests had their photos taken by a Facebook integrated photo kiosk in front of the illuminated Ipanema beach backdrop, previewed the brand’s 2014 collection and left with a pair of the Limited Edition Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week flip flops in-hand.
Ipanema is a fun, hip and colorful sandal and flip flop collection inspired by one of the most beautiful and famous beaches in the world.  Made for the fashion-conscious contemporary woman, the styling is constantly in touch with the latest trends. In addition to the brand’s inherent fashion sense, Ipanema’s products are 100% recyclable and feature unique traits including surrounding prints wrapping around the footbed, anatomic soles offering increased comfort and fit, and enhanced uppers and straps.
